CHARADRIIFORMES: Charadriidae
Vanellus miles
We came across this Masked Lapwing in a park in Darwin.
The bird had laid a clutch of four eggs in a shallow depression in a pebbled area.
The eggs were totally exposed and here the adult bird is seen shading the eggs from the full sun.
Though only the first month of spring the temperature during the day was already getting up to 34 degrees centigrade!
